The Willie Ivy, Jr. Memorial Scholarship offers college scholarships to students from the Indianapolis area with financial need who displays academic excellence, strong citizenship and character, and a desire to make a meaningful contribution to society.
The Willie Ivy, Jr. Memorial Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Board of Directors of The Ian Smith Foundation to honor Willie Ivy, Jr. The Board created this scholarship to provide financial support for young men and women of exceptional promise in the Indianapolis area.

This scholarship seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated students to pursue opportunities available to them and to be courageous in following their dreams to pursue higher education.

There are no special eligibility requirements for the scholarship. All students may apply regardless of race, nationality or financial status. Each student must write a brief essay. The essay should be at least 500 words. The essay must be based on the following topic:

  • If you were born into slavery and was able to escape at the age 12, how would you spend the rest of your life?
